WBL #3

This Saturday the WBL takes to HHI for the:
Paris Hilton Rock Your Sexy Bicycle Tour: Our dear friends of HHI are bringing SEXY BACK!
Sponsored by Road Fish Bicycle Shop (The Savannah’s WBL's first official sponsor!!)

If you are too sexy for your bicycle, if you are too sexy for your jersey, if you are too sexy for your Camelback, if you are too sexy for a group ride, if you are too sexy for your helmet, if you are too sexy for your bibs then this is the ride for you! Bust out your $10k bicycle with the $8K ceramic ball bearing hub full carbon wheels, platinum water bottles, and your solid gold frame pump. Who cares if the gold is too soft to make the pump actually function! It is all about looks this weekend. Go ahead and Rock your Louis Vuitton saddle bag with your custom lamb skin Italian hand stitched Gucci bicycle gloves. Those full leg bib tights made by Assos for a mear $650.00 are the norm this weekend so wear 'em with pride. Together we will all make Paris Hilton proud as we take to the streets of HHI with style. After the initial strutting of the sexiness the battle will begin this weekend and it is serious.

The gloves are coming off this weekend regarding sprint points and the Prince himself Vince. All Pro 1,2,3 men and all A category Nestor cup racers will be eligible to sprint for points this weekend. The Pro 1,2,3's and the infamous Nestor Cup A's have been calmly waiting in the deep forests of Pine Barren sharpening their cogs. The anvils have been out as the blacksmiths of Quality Bike shop, Road Fish, Bicycle Link, and Perry Rubber have been creating, shaping, and pounding steel for special 66 tooth cogs for these men to come out and do battle this weekend. Vince-the-Prince will have his hands full as deals will be made, alliances broken, and all out war in this series runs its' course amongst the herd. We will have cash payout 3 deep for the final sprint. The last rider across the line gets a free cup of Joe. Michael “Slam Dunk” Jordon won it last weekend. Get ready to track stand at the line for this cup of Joe.

Some will triumph and some will perish, but all will walk away with honor after this Saturday's battle comes to a close...

WBL #2 results and overall standings, etc

Well a bunch of us squandered away another perfectly good Saturday riding our bicycles around for several hours.  Not expecting much of a crowd due to the other rides in area, Jared and I were shocked at the huge turn out.  Always good to ride with friends on a sunny Savannah Saturday.  The riders signed in and were briefed on today's operation and then took to Bull Street like a bunch of Bulls.  All was pleasant and great until the whistle blew at Black Creek.  A gap was instant but a solo victory was not to be . . . as the rolling hills proved to change the dynamics for these flat-landers.  As the lead-out took shape, it was Vince the prince that rode like a bat out of hell to take out the first sprint without ever looking back.  Blain bring da Pain and Greg the powder keg cleaned up the rest of the podium spots.  This set the tone for the day with a lot of planning and cahoots.  As if we were on a pirate ship on the eve of a mutiny with Vince the Prince as our captain everyone was plotting and planning on how to take this ship and the captain down.  The crew manned the front of the lines and held it together as we worked in unison against the wind making our way towards the dreaded Crosswinds sprint.
Like a prisoner wearing leg chains and hand cuffs, our Captain was chained to the ship and the crew was not letting him go let alone out of site.  As Vince the Prince waved his sword at us and dared us, Blain brought the pain to all as he laid down the gauntlet and established a huge 500 meter gap!  Greg kept his finger on the button ready to release his cannons but stayed cool under pressure.  As The ship started to go down and taking the captain Vince the Prince with it, a lead out finally formed in the final witching hour as Blain painfully surged past the 1 k and only had 800 meters left.  The crew suffering from scurvy, dehydration, and cramps was down to 5.  As the crew started to come apart at the 500 meter mark the prince grinned at the crew and let his legs explain why he is the captain of this ship and departed solo attaining an instant gap.  Blain now in pain and seeing the finish line passes the 200 meter mark with a handful of seconds to the Prince.  . . .  In order to show the entire crew why today he is the Captain and no one else, Vince the Prince put his sword into the last Hold out Blain and took the sprint with authority within the last 100 meters.
Greg had enough black powder left in the keg to stay with the Prince for A podium spot as did Joey BRUCE Lee that also crouched like a hidden dragon behind the Prince for a podium spot.
It was shortly after this, that the ship docked at the Zip'n'go GasCo port for some R&R.  The Prince subtly started talking trash as he apologized for not going fast enough!!  It was at this point that the crew came unglued and made vow to take their captain come hell or high water!
The final sprint began on Hwy 80 and was fast pace line with a lot of cat and mouse tactics.  The crew was all over the Prince and he knew it.  Once again the pain train began with Blain as he let his legs do the talking at 600 meters and no one had an answer or come back.  As the crew thrashed their Captain the Prince in the background it was Blain that took the gold in the final sprint winning 15 bucks cash and a medal!  As the Prince raced in anger Vince jumped one last time like a tired stallion he reared, bucked, and kicked but it was not enough cause Greg unleashed his black powder Keg and said sorry captain but it is pay back.
Greg took second and Vince the Prince finished third in the final sprint.
All three won cash and a medal.

Well, it is that time again for another infamous Winter Bike League ride to help you get in those winter miles.  Pack a loaf of bread and a pint of beer as this one will be a bit longer.

We are doing our Winter base miles and want to go easy and long.  However, we need to keep from getting bored.  All non-category sprinters make deals with those who can sprint and help them out!  They may return the favor later when you need it!  For any rider that wants a lead out may want to offer up one of the elites two packs of Smokes and a 5th of Gin  .. .  you will more than likely win the sprint from the lead out you get.
Tips for points - chill on the ride and help keep the pace "chill", that way when the whistle blows you won't get left behind.  Cause when the whistle blows "The Heat is ON"

Ride Recap

The Savannah Winter Bike League got off to a Rockin Good Start!!
(by Mitch Askew)
With the usual high count of riders and various ride level options several were concerned about the WBL as the newest addition to Savannah's Cycling family ride options.  The moderate 40 mixed in with the WBL riders and we had a great double pace line of about 19 - 21 mph all the way to Jon Carter road.  At Jon Carter the moderates took their usual route and the Savannah Winter Bike League participants/ victims went straight.  It was at this point that if you decided to check out the WBL there was no turning back.  Like a bad horror movie of the 70's the splitting of the moderates and WBL group was like the victims in the horror movies splitting up to go check out "that noise" in the basement and attic.  "Splitting up is always a good plan"

With almost 20 peeps on our first WBL, all were fired up!!  Considering it is Hallow's Eve and race season is many moons away the group rode mostly at ave spd of 19 with no one protesting the pace.  Most talked, enjoyed the weather and commented on the nice pace.

At Jimmy D, the sprint lines, rules, prizes, and store stop were announced.  Everyone grew silent as the first pending attack/sprint zone neared.  Several asked what to do, to some of the veteran elite riders. The Vet's just shrugged their shoulders and said, you will figure it out.
After taking the right turn off of Jimmy D the whistle starting blowing like a tea kettle about to explode.  Several jumped up the road.  Richard Dislewrath of Con turned his cranks like someone spinning a piece of wood to start a fire.  Very quickly the group exploded like a ketchup bottle in the microwave and the lines were drawn.  With bayonets drawn this was war!

The sprint only being open to men cat 5, Nestor cup B's and Women cat 3,4 . . . Spencer lawless Wallace was like Clint Eastwood in the Lawless wild west.  He came out today with both barrels blazing and a fist full of dollars daring anyone to challenge him.  Using the cat 2's and 3's that were mixing it up toward the sprint line Lawless Wallace wrapped them around him like a warm blanket on a cool Hallow Eve night and tucked in for the final 200 meters.  At 100 meters the elites dropped off and Wallace like a spark to a gasoline fire lit up his rivals taking the mid sprint for 3 points.  Patrick Mean Meade rolled in for solid second place in the sprint and the Mac Attack rolled in for third picking up a point.

At the BP gas station store stop, all oil was secured and the only thing spewing all over the place was the Champagne Coca Cola that Spencer Lawless Wallace was spraying at the crowd atop the podium in the leader's jersey as the first Leader of the Savannah WBL.

At the last over pass on hwy 80 the whistle blew like a freight train coming down the tracks and the group once again split like an old wooden chair under a fat man.

Once again the Elite riders drilled the pace, but that was nothing to the Outlaw Jose Wales, Mr. Spencer Wallace.  Sporting the custom made Jersey that can only be found at your local wal-mart in the good ole boy huntin section he tucked in among the who's who of cycling in Savannah.  Most peeps including Josh Barrett himself were throwing all of their matches of energy into a bonfire pit.  That was not the case with Wallace, as he was not lighting matches today.  He was pulling the trigger on his m-249 grenade launcher and decimating the competition.

With shifters on the line as first place prize and the weight of the leaders jersey, he took the sprint like Roy Barnes taking candy from a baby.

The current official standings:
Fist place = Spencer Lawless Wallace 9 points
Second Place = The Mac Attack with 5 points
Patrick Mr. Mean Meade= 5
Bill rides anything Sellers = 2
All other riders = 1 point
Although second and third are tied the person finishing higher on the final sprint gets moved up a position.
Officially Bill Sellers is a cat 3 and not allowed to sprint but considering that he took the first sprint on his unicycle that he was riding today the committee gave him an extra point for being . . . Bill Sellers.

Sprint points only go 3 deep; attack zones= 3-2-1; final zone = 5-3-2 (Honor System)
